I wanted to share with you the true tale of this wonderful canine. It truly is a story of devotion and loyalty that warms the heart and penetrates the barriers of death.

A Friend Waits

Professor Hidesaburō Ueno lived in Tokyo with his beloved Akita named Hachiko. Everyday Hachiko would see Ueno off to work from his home and then, at the end of the day, greet him at the nearby Shibuya Train Station.

One day in May 1925 would be the end of their daily routine together, for Ueno suffered a fatal stroke during his day at work. He never returned to his faithful friend that day nor any day thereafter.

Hachiko was given away to new owners but the loyal dog always ran off in search of his true master. After returning to Ueno's former home several times, Hachiko realized that he did not live there anymore. Hachiko then searched for his friend at the train station. There he perpetually returned everyday henceforth, always at the end of the day and at the precise time of Ueno's scheduled arrival. Hachiko waited there in vain every day for 11 years.

Hachiko Waits
Hachiko Waits

The Story Spreads

Some of the people at the train station recognized Hachiko from his prior rendezvous with Ueno.  Knowing about Ueno's death, they were deeply touched by this act of loyalty and brought him food.  Eventually the story spread about Hachiko.

A former student of Professor Ueno's heard of Hachiko's vigil and went to the station to see the loyal Akita.  Fascinated by Hachiko, the former student wrote several papers on him.  In 1932, one of these papers was published in Tokyo's largest newspaper.  This article threw Hachiko into Japan's national spotlight.

Hachiko became the personification of loyalty.  School teachers and parents would use him as a teaching model for dedication and loyalty.  In 1934, a well-known Japanese artist sculpted a likeness of Hachiko to be placed at the entrance of Shibuya Station; in the same area he waited for his long-deceased master.  Hachiko himself was there for the statue's dedication.

The Vigil Ends

On March 8 1935, eleven years after it started, Hachiko's vigil came to an end. At almost 12 years old, the Akita succumbed to heart-worm disease. The nation of Japan mourned the loss of their most beloved canine.

Hachiko's long wait was over and finally he is reunited with his beloved master at Rainbow Bridge.

That's a good boy, Hachiko.

That'll do.

A Tribute In Music

Here are two music videos made in tribute of Hachiko. The songs are "You'll Be In My Heart" and "Bittersweet", the scenes are taken from the 1987 movie Hachikō Monogatari.

Bittersweet

You'll Be In My Heart

Never Forgotten

  • Hachiko's body was preserved and put on display in the National Science Museum of Japan.  He is still there today.
  • Every year, at an annual ceremony at Shibuya Station, Hachiko is remembered for his loyalty.

I had heard of this dog before. Thank you for writing this. I look forward to seeing the movie! Here is a story I wrote about my father's dog, McTavish, who was a real life dog hero:

I love this story. I saw it on tv years ago. It made me cry then, and I want to cry now. Thanks for making the story live on in words for others to see.

There was an incident in my area recently, over the weekend, where a four year old boy wandered away from home with his two puppies. He wasn't found till the next day, and he would have frozen to death if he was alone - his two (big) puppies kept him warm and alive all night.

P.S. That Cha Cha ShamWOW comment was very funny! :D

Why is it that I cry so much during death scenes of animals but not at all during human deaths? Please tell me.

He looks like my Nanook, except she is black. And she is very loyal, also... I don't think I could piss that dog off for any reason in the world, unless someone tried to hurt us. She defenately holds a special place in my heart.

Great Hub.

At the end of the movie, Hachi, the newest, when they show the pictures of the real hachi, that is the saddest part of the movie, so much of the movie is sad really, but that, i mean i could barely breath! It is such a beautiful story, but it cuts me up so badly!

i have watched both version, Hollywood n japanese version of the movie. n to the extend..i travelled all the way to shibuya just to see the place where Hachi used to sit n wait for his master..that's how deep he touched my inner soul. standing right there had gave me a feeling of going back into time n i was like seeing Hachi wandering around waiting ...i cried but i guess the japanese who passed me by understood well the reason for the tears. proud to be there at the station n visited the science museum where 'hachi' was kept.n thats all, never been to anywhere else in japan but shibuya station/hashiko exit/museum..crazy me ayyy..thanks dork for sharing. i would not know about hachi, would never watched the movie, would never travelled to japan if its not because of your writing. thanks very much again :)

a true to life story of man's best friend (but not to those people who eat dog meat and beat dogs)because they see dogs as delicacy and shock absorber).

Indeed the story is so inspirational, I myself would love my dog (even if she's a mongrel even more, until her last breath or its the other way around.

rainybear 23 months ago

Just finished watching the movie. I remember my mom telling me the story when I was young and realy enjoyed finding out the whole story. I appreciate that they portrayed Hachi and his master reuniting at death.

Dog lovers everywhere are a blubbering mess. What a beautifully written tribute to Hachiko and his legacy. I worked for a family that raised and showed Akitas. They had one pure white champion that looked like Hachi. What a gorgeous intelligent breed of dog.

Thanks for bringing a story to Hub that I had not heard. Too soon after my own loss to watch the videos. I'll bookmark for later.

All the best to you.

That was really a GOOD movie! It made me cry after watching it and I can't stop it. I and my family are dog-lovers, and we really can relate to this story. I love the feeling that everytime we got home, we have our dogs waiting for us.

There's this one case that one of our dogs was slashed with a bolo knife by a passer-by. My father hurried after the perpetrator. Luckily, he was able to catch him and filed a case against him.

Fortunately, our dog suffered only minor injury / laceration. He then recovered.

Mass 19 months ago

I just watched this movie it made me really really sad--inside.

I keep thinking, that poor dog waited all his life by that train station

only to see one person's face. Unaware of the concept of death and

yet tangled up with old time memories, he can't stop waiting for his master.

Then I saw Hachiko's picture, his frown face, his ear curled like a

leaf as if autumn never ended in his life, I couldn't stop tears running

down my cheeks.

Lovedthisdog 19 months ago

I just watched the movie with Richard Gere on TV. I cried and cried; the movie made me think of our dog, Manda. She suffered from Cushing's Disease at the end of her life and yet she would not give up until my husband, who had gotten Manda as a pup, told her she could 'go.' When we finally took her to her favorite vet, she knew on that final trip she was going to finally be free of her pain and she went peacefully. She was put to sleep and went so quickly her eyes did not even close. I am crying as I write this.

Hachi is a true story of loyalty and love--two things we have so little of in this crazy world in which we live.

shika 19 months ago

Gosh I feel the same way that all of you do! I was crying so hard during the entire movie. I just saw it today. I knew how it ended so from the start I was sad. Ridiculous huh? I lost my angel doggie back in 2008 and maybe that's why I was so sad. But that dog was so in love with his daddy, it was so cute. They are so loyal, humans should learn a lesson or two.

Cudos to all the men that wrote about their tears, I love that they can admit that.

I wrote this hub and I still haven't seen the movie! I just haven't been able to put myself through that emotional wringer. Recently I put it in my Netflix queue, so I'm progressing toward it. It's #4 on the list. Once it rises to the top, I may chicken out and knock it down a little. Baby steps, baby steps, baby steps!

Lovedthisdog and shika, I'm very sorry to hear of each of your losses.

I come from a family of animal lovers and I've had my share of beautiful, loyal dogs, but Hachiko's story is one to be shared with the whole world. It's an example of real love and loyalty. Thank you for posting this, dork. I'm watching the Richard Gere version now...and I'm crying my eyes out even though I knew what was gonna happen. Both my dogs are terminal. One is in remission and doing great. The other is...not, and my heart breaks a little more each day. Watching this movie, seeing the dedication, the love in both dog and man...well, it just makes me realize how special a gift God gave me when He sent me my babies, Remmy and Holly. They're 14 and 12 and I know it won't be long now, especially for Remmy, and that devastates me. He's my best friend, has been for 14 years. :(

One thing I do know, though, is that when my father was dying he said he could hear his dogs barking. He called them by name, but I didn't know of any dogs by those names. Later I mentioned it to my mom and she knew they were from his youth. More importantly, Dad was positively gleeful when he told me that he could hear "his" Shelby-dog barking with Groover and Sam, and that Shelby was coming to see him soon. Dad sat in that hospital bed and clapped, smiled and was so excited that Shelby was coming for him. "He's getting closer now, I can almost see him! Oh, I can't wait to see my Shelby-dog! I've missed him so much," Dad said.

Shelby was my baby, but Dad's shadow. Dad and I had always bickered about whether or not animals go to Heaven when they die--him saying he wasn't sure, me saying that if I got to Heaven and my dogs weren't there, I was gonna have to take that up with God because it wouldn't be Heaven without them, especially Shelby, Remmy and Holly. That was the last night that Dad knew who I was, the last time we really talked. He died two days later.

Seeing how the movie ended, that's what I picture when I think of Dad's passing...Shelby patiently waiting all those years and my Dad, once again picking up his little shadow, cuddling him and getting all the sweet kisses little Shel used to give, both of them young, happy, healthy again...just...sweet, pure love.

Okay, gotta go get some decongestant and more kleenex cause it's gonna be a long night. Thanks for the background and the videos, dork. You really do need to watch the movie, but definitely stock up on Kleenex first--you're so gonna need them.

Shortly after I made that post about dreading the loss that I knew was coming, my precious Remmy got to the point that I had no choice but to help him cross Rainbow Bridge. It was the hardest thing I've ever had to do and I would give anything to have not had to make that choice, but it was not to be. I set him free even though it broke my heart to do it.

I still have my beautiful, precious girl Holly and I'm thankful for her every day--she truly keeps me going. I don't know what I'll do when I lose her. I think they may as well bury me with her...right next to Remmy. Dogs are much more loyal than people and their love is unconditional and forever...just as Hachiko has proven.

I watched the movie "Tashi, A Dog's Tale" for the 1st time this morning. The tears came as it was so touching. We have 2 dogs, a 5 y/o schnauzer by the name of Cleo who was homeless temporarily and was given to us 2 years ago on Good Friday. We had to put our beloved mixed breed Paddy (born on St. Patrick's Eve) put to sleep. We adopted an Australian Shephard by the name of Katie. She is a rescue dog and have had her since Oct. 1st, 2011. My husband and I believe that St. Francis of Assisi the patron saint of animals sent them to us. Our 2 dogs are loyal and lovable as Tashi was. We need more stories like Tashi's. Thank you for sharing.

i watched this movie and read this story for the first time and i cried since when the professor died. dogs are faithful and loyal which humans lack. i wish i had a dog like hachiko and he never died. wish the movie had a happy ending. spread the message about the man`s best friend.

Just saw the movie on TV for the first time...I knew I should not have, now I can't stop crying! Only animals can love that way...so unconditionally. I have a cat and I love him with all my heart...I don't know what I would do without him. He can always cheer me up. No matter what. No human can! Thanks for posting that

I am very emotionally strong person and thought this could be only regular movie, but no, I was wrong.

It was so damn sad when his masters dies and the dog waits for him and he doesn't return. Days passed, weeks passed, months passed and then years. But this dog, this God of Loyalty kept coming and kept coming, teaching a lesson of love. I couldn't stopped crying after watching this movie. I had to take medicine due to over crying but I enjoyed this sorrow. How sad it is for this dog to wait for a such a long time without missing a single time. I love you Hachi! RIP with your master.

Heard abt this loyal n faithful friend called hachiko many years back - watched richard gere movie version, both me n my wife were very touch - shedding tears, around the same time bought the japanese movie version, again watch n both shedded more tears. Most recently we went to Shibuya station in tokyo to see n touch his monument, took some picture together with hachiko status. Hachiko may be long gone, touching his statue means very much to us - words cannot explain, only each individual feelings is fullfilled. I guess whoever reads this will have their own inner feelings. We said our own prayers there for hochiko. For he is one who spoke from his heart.
