Good Movies That Bombed at the Box Office

Heathers
"Greetings and Salutations."
This is an awesome movie about a high school student who also happens to be a psychopathic killer. Murder made funny. When a movie has you laughing at premeditated homicide, well that's just dark humor at it's best. Heathers is the template for brilliant black comedies. Sadly, this movie probably could not be made in this pathetic PC world we live in today.

The 6th Day
Interesting sci-fi movie about human cloning that is set in the not-to-distant future. A man is surprised to discover that he has been replaced by and clone, and that clone is now living with his family as him. Before he could confront this clone, an attempt on his life is made. He now must go on the run, all the while trying to discover who would want to "replace" him and their motive for doing so.

Thirteen Days
Well made account of the Cuban Missile Crisis and JFK's actions to avoid nuclear war. I found it interesting to see the inside perspective of that incredibly tense period.

Death Proof and Planet Terror double feature. Very entertaining! Must see for Tarantino and Rodriguez fans.

Moonlight Mile
Great movie about parents dealing with the murder of their daughter and her fiance trying to move on with his life. This is one of my favorites "laugh and cry" movies.

The Island
Awesome movie about Scarlett Johansson and her long blonde hair and skin-tight suit.

Slither
Super-gross horror/sci-fi/comedy movie. Very fun to watch. How could it not be?!?! It's an alien invasion movie with a zombie apocalypse twist! You top that off with genuinely funny stuff and lots of gross-out scenes.

Idiocracy
This movie shouldn't be on this list because it actually wasn't released nation-wide. I just wanted to profile it because I think it is freakin' funny!
It's about how stupid this world is getting and if we keep it up, in a few hundred years, we will all be on the verge of mental retardation.

Btw, the Slither here is NOT the Sharon Stone Slither, right? Though it is a gross movie, too! :D
Oh right.... I think Casino's the only movie she did worth mentioning :D
Well yeah, at the superficial level. I mean the hype and the buzz delivered but what did you get after? (and I don't mean THAT!) :D
Okay, got your point. Entertaining enough to avoid getting some razzies! Unlike the sequel which swept everything I think! :D
You should, But save it for your Halloween movie marathon. Should fit in nicely between Waterworld and Battlefield Earth :D
LOL I remember watching it in the cinema. Had to finish the whole mess - I got an extra large popcorn and bottomless Pepsi, oh you get the picture. I know, I read the reviews beforehand but it's free tickets so there! LOL
Btw, I have another assignment for you. Why not do one-hit wonders but this time do actors and not musicians. Like say Bo Derek in "10". It would require research though and not just your taste or cinematic preferences :D
I haven't seen the others, but I loved The Alamo. I was just thinking about renting it again today! I will check out some of the others! :) Thanks!
I am inclined to watch the "6th Day", but would avoid, "Slither", as I dislike anything that is gross and horrific. "The Island" sounds like a escapist movie when one is feeling lazy.
Hey, Cris says we have a hubber who worked with Kubrick... can you guys share the link to the hub?
Heathers IS a great movie! I haven't seen the others, but I'll put them on my list of movies to check out. Thanks for alerting me to some that I might have overlooked!
I like eXistenZ and I think it only made like 2 million USD but had a budget of 31 million CAD. That has to be a box office bomb but was a good movie.
Heathers was hilarious; I'll check out some of the others. Thanks for recommending them.
Thank you, this is an awesome list. Some i've seen, some I haven't, but I will. I loved Heathers and The Sixth Day; can't wait to see Moonlight Mile. Saw the Island, it was cool but I actually noticed the special affects, not SJ, sorry. I mean, she's gorgeous, but I remember the story also...*smiles*
Great post.
just checkin if you listened to me! LOL thanks :D
The 6th Day was great, LOVED the Island, and what person on the planet hasn't at least seen a snippet of Heather's in their lifetime?? Can't believe some of those didn't do better! :D
Wow ... I'm totally out of the loop. Haven't seen any of these. Most of my B-movie fare is usually in the hack-n-slash genre.
Friends and I make make an event of it: with lots of chocolate and champagne. "Let's Make Fun of a B-Horror Flick and Get Drunk!"
Hey, we're chatting over at the "Artisan" hub, a bit. Come join if you'd like.
I want to watch idiocy, I have seen a couple of the others, but idiocy is a funny idea.
In Australia i'm pretty sure "Thirteen Days" was released as 'made for TV' and played as a mini-series. In the 10.30pm slot. rated really......well I don't think it rated at all.
A female black lab. Turning 2 on October. Sorry off topic. Kill me later :D
Have some of them but haven't watched them yet. Buy movies for under a dollar but just don't have the time to watch em all.
I think I have one or two pics of Coco when she was but two months old. I'll look for it. But I have a Maltese too, Lila. I have several pics of her on my PC - she's the "show" dog afterall! LOL
I drink my electrolytes
get up get up your interview's out!
Loved your sleek interview. Gee two hottys in the one Hub.Interviewer and interviewee, boy oh boy,I fainted,LMAO
Heathers is one of my absolute favorites!!!! It really is a twisted, and wonderful movie!!! You are right, it could never be made today. I also loved Grindhouse and Idiocracy!!! Every time my daughter tells me she ate at Carl's Jr. I just laugh. For those of you who don't live on the west coast, it is a real place.
I loved a bunch of those movies on your list...Slither, Idiocracy, get Carter & Grindhouse. I always enjoyed Waterworld also...I don't know know...maybe it's my guilty pleasure.
I'm surprised Idiocracy did so badly! It had stupid moments, but overall I thought it was watchable!
I agree with Susie Duzy, when I saw "Idiocracy" I thought was hilarious, and good, but there are a lot of stupid moments. In addition, I think the Trailer gave too much away, in terms of what the movie is about, heck the Title alone "Idiocracy" pretty much sums up what the movie is about. It's a real shame, but it happens even to movies that are even better than this one..
I just watched the movie 'Idiocracy'. It was hilarious! I dont know how it bomebed. Some people dont know a good movie when they see one.
Great hub. Heather and Idiocracy are at the top of my list. I own them both. I view Idiocracy as kinda a horror movie... we are headed in that direction. Truly scary.
A good movie is a good movie, despite the receipts. There are a lot of movies that I like despite what the critics say. PLUTO NASH anyone ...? No ... Just me ... okay.
I heard Wizard of Oz bombed, Also Bringing up Baby starring Gary Grant & Kathrine Hepburn.
Alot of Classic movies were duds at the box office.
I seen The Alamo At the theatre, Much more accuracte then the disney or John Wayne versions. I learned alot from that movie.
dude should totally add half-baked

I think for the first time in a long time, we are in agreement! I haven't seen Idiocracy, Slither and Moonlight Mile, (they'll be on my list now) but the rest yeah, they're good movies alright. Specially Heathers and The Alamo. If The Island was about Scarlett, they did a pretty good job I agree. I do hope these movies had at least ROI-ed from their video releases.
Cool list! Thanks for sharing :D
